Aligned With My Own Personal GPS

By Kathy Gottberg

A popular practice around the first of every new year is to pick a word for that year.  Much easier, not to mention more intuitive, than making New Year’s Resolutions, picking a word to serve as a North Star can be very beneficial.  During 2018 my word was flexible.  I wanted to be more flexible in my body, my mind and my emotions all year long.  Not only did it get me into a “mostly” two-day-a-week yoga practice, it also helped my thinking relax and flow as the year progressed.  It was such a success for me that I decided to come up with a new word for 2019.  I’m hoping this word will guide and direct my intentions as much as the last.  And yes, I strongly encourage every reader to take the time to figure out what one word might inspire and pilot them in the next 365 days. Lessons From A Magic Shop For A Happy And Healthy Life

By Kathy Gottberg

Wouldn’t it be nice to walk into a store and be handed an instruction manual for living a happy and healthy life?  A man named James Doty was offered exactly that back when he was twelve years old.  This last week while I was researching another topic, I stumbled upon a podcast by James Doty and immediately knew that his story had the potential to change lives.  Of course, even when we have a map right in front of us, that doesn’t mean that we always take the right turns at the right time or the path is without peril.  Still, Doty’s story offers us all a glimpse of things we can each do to create the life we feel called to live. 10 Of My Favorite Gratitude Quotes and Why They Matter

By Kathy Gottberg

I doubt it is a surprise to many of you that one of my favorite holidays is Thanksgiving.  But once the official day is over, it’s far too easy for us to let it slip away and get busy preparing for the slew of holidays to come.  Making matters worse are all the retailers and advertising companies doing their best to sell us things for others and ourselves.  That is why I decided this year to spend a little more time focusing on what Thanksgiving means to me on the day and week after.  And what better way than by sharing the SMART words of many of my favorite writers and speakers?

With that in mind, here are ten quotes from my collection that I believe have the ability to help me the most.

The Five Most Helpful Messages I Get From Abraham-Hicks

By Kathy Gottberg

It’s no secret that I am a fan of Abraham-Hicks.  I’ve written about her/them before and shared different thoughts that they generate in me on a regular a basis.  But every now and then someone will ask me why I continue to listen to them over and over.  That’s when it occurred to me that I have never shared some of the overriding themes that I most appreciate and what keeps me coming back for more.  What I think it boils down to are the following five messages that are woven into every lecture—and why I believe that these messages offer both encouragement and support for us all. Relinquishing The Need For Agreement Or Understanding From Others

By Kathy Gottberg

One of my favorite morning routines is walking my dog Kloe.  Not only is it healthy for my body (and Kloe’s) but I also make it healthy for my mind by listening to podcasts and other lectures by authors I enjoy.  I purposely pick positive and uplifting talks and seminars because I care about what kind of information I am putting into my brain.  However, because we traveled so much this summer and although I still did plenty of walking, I hadn’t listened to a lecture in months. This week I downloaded some new ideas from one of my favorite speakers, Abraham-Hicks.  And with synchronicity at play, I heard exactly what I needed at this time in my life.  That was the loud and clear message that it is time for me to stop my need to alter my behavior to get others to agree or even understand me.  [Read more…]

My Current Story of Living, Dying and Everything In Between

By Kathy Gottberg

My older sister Ann and I.

Most of the time I write about ideas that arise in my mind from books, podcasts or conversations.  While I cover some of my personal perceptions, I also do my best to share other views to add depth to the conversation. This time is different. This time the largest thing on my mind is the fact that my older sister Ann is dying. And while I realize that talking about death can be difficult, and in some cases even repellent, my goal is to write about it in a way that reminds us all that the experience of death is something we share.  Run from it or not, eventually death will touch us all.  Sometimes the SMARTest thing any of us can do is stop, look it in the eye, uncover the story we believe about it—then explore ways that may benefit us as we live out the remainder of our life. Do You Know Your Poop To Value Ratios?

By Kathy Gottberg

This morning during my morning walk I listened to Abraham-Hicks on audio as she explained the Law Of Attraction to someone at one of her seminars. As I’ve mentioned before, I’m a fan of LOA, because even though I don’t agree with everything it proposes, the majority of the message is positive and self-empowering.  This morning Hicks offered a phrase I’ve never heard before—a “poop-to-value ratio.”   She also explained that a friend of hers came up with the expression, but usually uses a more descriptive word than poop.  Naturally, the audience laughed in acknowledgment.  But even though it sounds a bit crude, what struck me as important was how clearly this phrase reminded me of the choices, decisions, and tradeoffs we each face every single day.   And the best way to know if we’ve made the right choice for us is being aware of the poop-to-value ratio involved. We Didn’t Come To Get It Done

By Kathy Gottberg

SMART Living 365 With Memorial Weekend right around the corner, I think a lot of people are making plans for summer vacation. I know I am. I’ve also read that people spend more time planning their vacations than they do their lives—but that’s another topic for another blog post.   Then this morning I listened to another lecture by Abraham-Hicks and through the course of a question and answer period Abraham said, “You didn’t come to get it done.”   Another way of saying that is, “It’s the journey, not the destination.” However, if you are anything like me, I need to be reminded over and over that the gift of today is reason enough for my life.  What about you? Please Be Responsible For The Energy You Take With You Wherever You Go

By Kathy Gottberg

SMART Living 365.comI’m the sort of person that if you invite me to dinner I will always ask what I can bring. I firmly believe that doing things together makes just about anything more easy and fun for everyone involved. But this morning I received a great reminder while being taken on my two-mile walk by my dog Kloe. As usual, I was listening to an inspiring talk by Abraham-Hicks and she clearly reminded me that everywhere we go and with everything we do—we take our energy (or as Abraham-Hicks calls it, we take our vibration) with us. Whether invited to a party, talking on the phone, or putting posts on Facebook, we are all sharing our energy and vibration with everyone we encounter. So, are we bringing our Wholeness, wisdom, and clarity—or are we bringing our worry, fear, and pain? For those of us who believe we want to be a positive force in the world, maybe it’s time to claim full responsibility for everything we bring to the table. [Read more…]

10 Lies We Tell Ourselves That Keep Us From Living Happy And SMART

By Kathy Gottberg

I do my best here on SMART Living to stay away from politics. That’s not because I don’t have an opinion, but my intention here is to instead inspire and encourage us all to think and form our own opinions from a space of awareness, compassion and personal responsibility.   With that said, it occurred to me that much of the divisiveness we see and hear these days originates in some fundamental lies that we may be telling ourselves. Those lies or untruths are quite common and perhaps by taking the time to shine some light on them, we just might find that we have taken a wrong turn somewhere along the line.   Here then, are ten falsehoods some people tell themselves that keep them from being happy and SMART.  [Read more…]
